Day 2 - 115 Miles To Date - Warrenton, Va
Hey everyone! Blogging is a lot harder than I expected with how tired we are and the wifi situation, but I will try to post as much as possible. First off, please follow @4ksanfrancisco on twitter and @SF4kforcancer on Instagram for more frequent updates. Day 1 was absolutely awesome! I tried writing in my journal at the end of the night, but I think the first half of the day I was just in pure shock that this was actually happening so I couldn't remember much. All of our friends and family crowded the Baltimore Harbor super early in the morning to see us off. We dipped our back bike tires in the harbor as a huge group and each team was sent their separate ways with their respective alumni. The alumni were SO helpful and it was almost kind of a tease for the next day because of how smoothly it went. We biked through some of the city and eventually to back roads in Maryland, eventually crossing over into DC where we had a couple hours to explore the monuments and get a picture of the classic 4k pose in front of every building. The alumni that drove one of the vans went ahead and got us Olive Garden and Buffalo Wild Wings donated, among other awesome snacks for lunch. Once we were finished in DC, we rode the final 8 or so miles into Alexandria, Va. We also arrived to a huge sleeping area and pasta, salad, and garlic bread ready for us. Day 2 was a little more hectic, and I have definitely decided that driving the van is incredibly more stressful than riding my bike. My teammate Shannon and I were in charge of the water van. Basically we are responsible for driving ahead and following the directions to draw chalk on the road at any turns on the route. There are also several water/snack stops along the way, in which we stop the van about every 20 miles and fill up everyone's water bottles and give them any snacks we have in the van. Two things we found out today however - the chalk disappears rather quickly and bikes break more than you would think. We had a lot of back and forth to do today including bringing the water stop to people who were lost, picking up injured or those with broken bikes, fixing the bike rack that fell off, etc. BUT we all arrived safe and sound to Warrenton, Va and were so grateful to go over to the local sports complex for our first shower since Saturday night. Applebee's, Chicfila, Buffalo Wild Wings, and a few others were the donations for dinner tonight. I obviously can't remember every little thing that happens during the day, as wake up is at 5:30am and we arrive around 6pm, but I will be keeping a journal and taking LOTS of pictures and updating this blog as much as possible. Continue to follow our journey and thanks so much for the support so far! Cycle Inspire Unite.
