Day 35 - 2,035 Miles To Date - Syracuse, KS
I can't believe we're halfway through the trip! Today is just a rest day in Syracuse, we are talking about our trip to the local church at their service tonight and having a BBQ after, but otherwise we're just blogging and napping. Yesterday was brutal. I think I spoke too soon about the perfect conditions of day 33 because yesterday was the complete opposite. My day went in stages, however. The first 20 miles were exciting because we were all decked out for the 4th. The next 40 or so were kind of boring. The last 10 miles before lunch were where it started to get tough. The road turned slightly and we were headed directly into the wind with an occasional huge gust of wind from the left. No one wanted to leave the lunch stop and we still had about 35 miles left. Our motivation for yesterday was holiday excitement, the soldiers and veterans fighting for us, and still all of our loved ones affected by cancer. We had to keep all of that in mind yesterday to keep pushing because it just kept getting harder. Tyler and I felt a burst of energy after lunch and just cranked it out until the next water stop, after that my body was done. We just cruised the next 10 until where we met the police doing the escort for us, where again no one wanted to leave. The escort made it a little more exciting, but the miles since lunch had been full of crosswinds, head winds, rolling hills, and hot air. We continued into town all together behind the escort while listening to American themed songs, so that brightened us up a little bit, but by the time we got to the church we were so burnt out and delirious. The final mileage for the day was 109. We had a delicious lasagna dinner and just hung out until we left for fireworks. It was kind of interesting, I think it was just a giant group of people in the town that brought their own fireworks to shoot off. Nonetheless, it was pretty cool getting to go to fireworks in a random town to celebrate. Tomorrow is Colorado, but rumor has it the first couple days before the Rockies are unfortunately just like Kansas...
